Guideposts Shared Lives: Fostering Independence

Shared Lives is a form of independent living that offers people opportunities to live within family households and participate in their community as active citizens. The key aim of Shared Lives is to give the people who use the service a sense of belonging. This is achieved through supporting people with independent living skills, developing relationships and participating in the local community.

How does Shared Lives work at Guideposts?

Guideposts has been delivering Shared Lives schemes across four counties in the East of England since 1997, namely: Hertfordshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Within each of these areas we have dedicated teams who recruit and train caring individuals in the community to become Shared Lives carers, carefully match these individuals with a service user and support the placement on an ongoing basis.

Up until now our schemes have been largely supporting adults with learning disabilities but we see a real opportunity to make use of Shared Lives principles to provide a flexible approach to placements and support to meet differing needs and aims of the people using the schemes.

Why is Shared Lives a good alternative?

As well as meeting the requirements for a cost-effective solution which promotes independence and social inclusion for each individual, Shared Lives also makes savings for the public purse. For example, the average net savings from a long-term Shared Lives arrangement per person per year are £26,000 for people with Learning Disabilities, compared with residential care.
